Charisteas has history of goal success

Town's new £2.5m target Angelos Charisteas boasts an impressive goal-scoring record over the course of his 11 year career, netting 65 goals in 243 appearances for his clubs.

The 6 foot 4 inch target man, nicknamed “The Fallen Angel” is also a hero in his home country after scoring the goal which won them the Euro 2004 title in a shock against heavily-favoured Portugal.

In all Charisteas, who also represented his country in Euro 2008, has netted 19 goals in 68 games for Greece.

Starting his career in 1997 with Aris Salonica, the 28-year-old scored 19 times in 87 appearances, and added a further goal while on loan at Athinaikos.

A move to Werder Bremen followed and his goal-scoring success continued, as he found the net 18 times in 66 games.

He continued to impress in Holland, scoring 12 times in 31 games for Ajax before slipping down the pecking order under then-coach Henk ten Cate, who said that Charisteas was a great striker in the 4-4-2 system, but not the 4-4-3 that Ajax played.

That prompted a controversial move to Feyenoord, which sparked protests from some fans who did not want an ex-Ajax player at the club.

Nonetheless, Charisteas still managed to net 9 times in 28 games before his most recent move to Nuremberg.

And, if he comes to Ipswich, he could be expected to thrive in the 4-4-2 system that Jim Magilton favours as the club push towards a return to the Premier League.
